Uyuni City Guide: More than just the gateway to the salt desert [2026]
Most travelers only see Uyuni as a transit station to the famous salt desert - one night in a hostel, off in the jeep the next morning, and bye-bye. Yet this rugged, authentic desert town at an altitude of 3,660 meters has more to offer than meets the eye.
As a German-speaking guide who has been organizing tours through Uyuni for years, I know the city inside out. In this guide, I'll show you why it's worth planning an extra day, which tours are really worth the money, how to find the best salt desert agency and what you need to know about this fascinating, often underrated city.
Uyuni: The basics
Location & climate
Altitude: 3,660 meters (acclimatization important!)
Population: approx. 30,000
Climate: Extreme! Warm during the day (15-25°C), freezing cold at night (-10 to 5°C)
Best time to visit: April-October (dry season), November-March (rainy season = mirror effect!)
History in brief
Uyuni was founded in 1889 as a railroad junction** - a strategic point for the transportation of minerals from the Andes. The town experienced its heyday when trains transported silver, tin and other ores to the Pacific coast.
The decline: When the mines were exhausted and the railroad became less important, Uyuni fell into decline. Today the town is almost entirely dependent on tourism - over 200,000 visitors a year come for the salt flats.
The result: Uyuni is functional, not beautiful. Dusty streets, simple houses, harsh climate. But it is precisely this authenticity that gives it its charm - there is no embellishment for tourists here.
Why Uyuni is more than just a place to pass through
1. the legendary train cemetery
The Cementerio de Trenes (train cemetery) is one of the most photogenic motifs in Bolivia - rusty steam locomotives from the 19th century, abandoned in the desert.
What to expect:
- Dozens of old trains and carriages from the heyday (1890-1940)
- Perfect for climbing, photography and exploring
- Especially beautiful at sunset (golden light!)
- Free of charge and freely accessible
How to get there: 3 km outside the city, on foot (30 min.), by bike (10 min.) or cab (5 BOB).
Tip: Most salt desert tours start here - if you do the tour, you save yourself the extra visit. But it's magical at sunset!
2. authentic Andean life
Uyuni is not as touristy and polished as Cusco or La Paz. You experience real Bolivian small-town life:
- Mercado Central: Locals buy quinoa, potatoes and llama meat
- Street vendors:** Salteñas (dumplings) and api (hot corn drink) for breakfast
- Simple restaurants:** Menú del día (menu of the day) for 15-20 BOB (2-3 EUR)
Why this is important: Many Bolivia travelers only see highlights and hostels - in Uyuni you see how most Bolivians really live.
3. perfect acclimatization
Uyuni is located at 3,660m - higher than Cusco (3,400m), but lower than La Paz (3,600m) or Potosí (4,090m).
Strategy: If you are coming from Sucre (2,800m), Uyuni is the perfect stopover before higher places. An extra day here will help your body adapt.
4. starry skies like nowhere else
Uyuni has almost no light pollution - the starry sky is spectacular! The Milky Way is visible to the naked eye.
Tip: Go to the train cemetery or to the outskirts of town at night - bring warm clothes, it gets freezing cold!
The salt desert tour: What you need to know

- For whom:** Those who are not in a hurry
Rainy season vs. dry season
Dry season (April-October):
- ✅ Salt desert is passable
- ✅ Clear view, perfect for photos
- ❌ No mirror effect
- ❌ More tourists
Rainy season (November-March):
- ✅ Mirror effect! The salt desert becomes a giant mirror - surreal and spectacular
- ✅ Fewer tourists
- ❌ Some areas not accessible (e.g. Incahuasi Island)
- ❌ Tours can be canceled due to weather
My tip: If you want to experience the mirror effect, come in January-February - but be flexible with your schedule!
Choose the right agency
There are over 100 agencies in Uyuni - the quality varies greatly!
What you need to look out for:
1. price vs. quality
- Cheap (50-80 EUR):** Old jeeps, large groups (6-8 people), bad food, unreliable
- Mid-range (120-150 EUR): Good jeeps, small groups (4-6), decent food ⭐ **Recommended!
- Premium (180-220 EUR):** New jeeps, small groups (4), good food, English-speaking guides
2nd group size
- Standard: 6 people per jeep (cramped!)
- Better: 4-5 people (more space, better visibility)
3. food & accommodation
- Ask for the menu plan - some agencies only serve noodles and rice
- Accommodation is usually basic (shared rooms, no heating) - this is normal
4. guide language
- Spanish: standard
- English: extra charge (10-20 EUR)
- German/French: Very rare, expensive
Recommended agencies:
- Red Planet Expedition** (middle class, reliable)
- Salty Desert (good value for money)
- Quechua Connection (premium, small groups)
- Hodaka Mountain (popular with backpackers)
Important: Do not book at the bus station! Go directly to the agencies on Avenida Ferroviaria and compare offers.
What you need to bring
Clothing:
- Warm jacket (at night -15°C!)
- Sun hat & sunglasses (reflective!)
- Scarf & gloves
- Several layers (onion principle)
Other:
- Sun cream (SPF 50+!)

- Camera with extra batteries (cold discharges batteries quickly)
- Snacks & water (food is often monotonous)
- Toilet paper (toilets are rare!)

Money & ATMs
Currency: Boliviano (BOB), 1 EUR ≈ 7-8 BOB
ATMs: Several in the city (Banco Nacional, Banco Unión), but often empty at weekends!
Tip: Withdraw enough cash in Sucre or Potosí - Uyuni is small and the ATMs are unreliable.
Internet & Communication
Wi-Fi: Available in most hostels, but slow.
Mobile phone: Entel and Tigo have reception in the city, but not in the salt desert!
Security
Uyuni is very safe - small town atmosphere, hardly any crime.
Despite this:
- ⚠️ Leave valuables in the hostel safe (especially during the tour)
- ⚠️ It is dark and cold at night - take a headlamp with you
- ✅ Taxis are cheap (5-10 BOB) and safe
Altitude sickness
Uyuni is at 3,660m - symptoms are possible, especially if you come directly from the lowlands.
Prevention:
- Drink coca tea
- Drink plenty of water (3-4 liters/day)
- Move slowly
- Avoid alcohol
For symptoms:
- Sorojchi Pills (in every pharmacy)
- Rest
- For severe symptoms: See a doctor (Hospital Uyuni, Av. Ferroviaria)
How long to stay in Uyuni?
Minimum: 1 night (arrival in the evening, tour the next morning)
Recommended: 2 nights (1 day exploring the city + train cemetery, then tour)
Optimal: 3 nights (extra day after the tour to relax)
Important: If you do the 3-day tour that ends in Tupiza, you don't need to plan a return to Uyuni!
Day trips from Uyuni
1. Colchani (salt mining village)
Distance: 20 km
Journey: Taxi (50 BOB return) or as part of the salt desert tour
What you see:
- Salt mining factories (visit possible)
- Salt handicrafts (figures made from salt)
- Authentic village on the edge of the salt desert
**Only if you have time - most salt desert tours stop here anyway.
2. Pulacayo (ghost town)
Distance: 20 km
Journey: Taxi (80 BOB there/back) or organized tour
What you see:
- Abandoned silver mine from the 19th century
- Old machines and buildings
- Historic railroad
It's worth it? Yes, if you like history! But not as spectacular as the salt flats.
Frequently asked questions
**Is Uyuni just a place to pass through?
No! The train cemetery, the authentic city life and the acclimatization make an extra day worthwhile.
**Can I visit the salt desert on my own?
Theoretically yes (with a rental car), but not recommended - no roads, no orientation, dangerous in bad weather. Take a tour!
**When is the best time for the mirror effect?
January-February (rainy season) - but be flexible, tours can be canceled due to weather.
**How cold is it really?
During the day: 15-25°C (warm in the sun)
At night: -10 to 5°C (freezing cold!)
On the tour (at night): -15°C (bring warm clothes!)
**Can I book the tour spontaneously?
Yes, but in the high season (June-August) it is better to book 1-2 days in advance. No problem in the low season (November-March).
My personal recommendation
Uyuni is not a nice place - it is dusty, cold and functional. But that's exactly what makes it authentic and honest. If you are prepared to get involved with this harsh desert town, you will be rewarded with one of the most spectacular natural wonders in the world: the Uyuni Salt Desert.
My tips:
✅ Plan 2 nights (1 day city + train cemetery, then 3-day tour)
✅ Choose a mid-range agency (120-150 EUR) - the difference to cheap tours is huge!
✅ Bring warm clothes (even in summer!)
✅ Be flexible - weather and roads can change plans
✅ Enjoy the authenticity - Uyuni is real Bolivia, not a tourist backdrop
And don't forget: The salt flats are just the beginning - the lagoons, geysers and flamingos on the 3-day tour are just as spectacular!
